Queen’s Glen academic clubs afford the opportunity to engage in interest-based learning outside the curriculum. Through activities in such areas as visual arts, writing, and media, students can discover new passions and build leadership abilities. Exploring new fields opens young people’s minds to opportunities for lifelong career and emotional fulfillment.
The Creative Writing club affords students the opportunity to understand stories from the author’s perspective. Members of this club will learn how to create believable characters, settings, and plotlines. It is the creative writing process itself which is explored. A great place for budding writers to get a sense of what tools and techniques authors use to foster our love of the written word.
Attention all aspiring thespians: this is the club for you! The head of our Fine Arts department will introduce members of this club to the world of acting. Topics include stage presence, voice projection, facial expressions, and theatre production. Harnessing the physical body to express a story to an audience and elicit emotional reactions is an incredibly rewarding experience. Find out more about how this is accomplished in the Drama Club.
With burgeoning film industries in many countries around the world, our Film Club seeks to experience this increasingly international industry. The students and Club Leader will learn to recognize differences between genres, understand the components necessary for each, and discover interesting and unique independent films. Whether you’re looking towards a career in film, or just want to learn more about this dynamic medium, you’ll thoroughly enjoy Film Club.
The Graphic Novel genre is a relatively new, and very much exciting, one to academe. The combination of complex immersive storylines with spectacular visuals affords readers the opportunity to enjoy the book in a multisensory way. This also means authors have to consider the illustrations that will accompany their text. Graphic Novels were popularized by young people, and many schools have also adopted them into their English lessons. Even older classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and Fahrenheit 451 have graphic versions. Participate in the growth of this unique new literary style!
The vast majority of media we encounter on a daily basis is not novels or plays. We are constantly bombarded with commercials, posters, advertisements, and much more. It is imperative students understand why and how these different media attempt to persuade and manipulate. Media is becoming more ubiquitous as time passes. Those who desire to be more independent and informed citizens require a knowledge of Media Literacy.
Music Club is not music lessons, but rather an exploration of music itself: Its importance to the individual and society, its different genres, its past, present, and future trends, etc. The goal of this club is to expose the students to the amazing variety of music around the globe.
The focus of the Environment Club is to engage young people in the environmental concerns of both today and tomorrow. Teaching students to find innovative solutions to today’s environmental concerns as well as galvanizing the local and global communities to become positive actors in preserving and maintaining the diversity and wonder of the natural world is the ultimate goal.
